Apprentice Teaching Assistant

Support children’s learning (including pupils identified on the SEN register) having full regard to their individual social, emotional, physical and intellectual needs.

Large primary academy school with a preschool.

Roles & Responsibilities

1.  Special Educational Needs:

  • Work jointly with the class teacher/SENCO or independently to set pupil targets
  • Support pupils in their understanding of I.E.P’s targets
  • Plan daily/weekly schedule for I.E.P implementation
  • Deliver routine tasks to enable pupils to achieve targets
  • Provide feedback on progress to class teachers, including concerns, using “post-it” notes
  • Complete review sheets
  • Monitor and record behaviour trends
  • Prepare and administer reward charts
  • Research and make appropriate resources

2.  Support for Learning

  • Lead and encourage interaction
  • Undertake guided reading and writing
  • Support/challenge pupils of varying abilities during independent work
  • Model excellent listening and speaking strategies
  • Take responsibility for home-reading/library
  • Support groups of pupils in cross-curricular ICT
  • Lead, and where appropriate plan, delivery of phonics
  • Attend monthly support staff meetings
  • Attend staff INSET where directed

3.  Assessment and Record-Keeping

  • Provide feedback for teachers (“post-it” notes) on short-term planning and pupils’ achievement of curricular targets
  • Track pupils at risk of under-achievement
  • Marking work for specific groups of pupils (in line with C16/ii Marking Policy) and setting appropriate targets
  • Assist the class teacher in marking tests
  • Undertake reading tests

4.  Display and Resources

  • Stripping and backing display boards with borders
  • Mounting work in line with M17 Display Policy
  • Preparation of key words and interactive questions
  • Letter templates for titles
  • Collect topic resources
  • Photographic evidence
  • Take joint responsibility with subject leaders for resources linked to a specific subject area

5.  Administrative

  • Registers
  • Photocopying
  • Laminating
  • Filing
  • Maintaining individual records

6.  General

  • Playground/snack duty (rota basis)
  • Supervise pupils on corridors – beginning/ends of day and break-time
  • Basic First-Aid and Hygiene
  • Assisting with extra-curricular activities (e.g. production)
  • Liaise with parents
  • Lost property

Skills Required

Good literacy and numeracy skills

Good organisational skills

Ability to build effective working relationships with pupils and adults

Skills and expertise in understanding the needs of all pupils

Knowledge of how to help adapt and deliver support to meet individual needs

Subject and curriculum knowledge relevant to the role, and ability to apply this effectively in supporting teachers and pupils

Excellent verbal communication skills

Active listening skills

The ability to remain calm in stressful situations

Knowledge of guidance and requirements around safeguarding children

Good ICT skills, particularly using ICT to support learning

Understanding of roles and responsibilities within the classroom and whole school context

Personal qualities

 Enjoyment of working with children

Sensitivity and understanding, to help build good relationships with pupils

A commitment to getting the best outcomes for all pupils and promoting the ethos and values of the school

Working Hours

Monday-Friday (Term Time Only) Hours will normally be 8.30am-3.30pm but one day p/w will be 10am-5pm (to work in the Out of School Club)

Total hours per week: 32.50
